Avoiding Nashville Traffic Congestion

As of 2025, Nashville continues to face significant traffic congestion, worsened by major construction projects aimed at managing the city’s rapid growth. Key trouble spots include Interstate 65 north of downtown, where a multi-phase widening project is underway to expand the highway between SR174 and US31W. This construction is expected to continue through late 2027 and includes frequent lane closures and traffic shifts, particularly near Long Hollow Pike. Interstate 24, especially between Nashville and Murfreesboro, remains one of the most congested corridors due to the ongoing I-24 SMART Corridor project, which is implementing advanced traffic management tools like ramp meters and variable speed limits. Within city limits, the Nashville Department of Transportation has launched 25 traffic calming projects to improve neighborhood safety and reduce speeding. Meanwhile, the city’s ambitious “Choose How You Move” initiative—a $3.1 billion transportation plan—is bringing long-term improvements such as synchronized traffic signals, new sidewalks, and enhanced bus routes.
